Next-generation design

Our designers don't develop concept cars for show, but for a tangible purpose. Because we use the principles and values of Kodo - Soul of Motion design, we develop ideas that exude character and personality. The design of our concept cars captures the vitality and sophistication of our future models, a new generation of distinctive Mazdas that will get your heart racing.

See what the future looks like

In 2017, at the Tokyo Motor Show, Mazda unveiled two concept cars. The Mazda VISION COUPÉ reflects our design vision for the next generation, and the Mazda KAI CONCEPT outlines the future of the hatchback. In this video, the global director of our design department, Ikuo Maeda, explains what our designs want to achieve.

How our design vision came about

The Kodo – "Soul of Motion" design philosophy was born in 2010. This is our belief - that a car is more than just a metal machine that gets you from one point to the next. It should exude a sense of vitality, forging a deep and inexplicable connection with its driver. Through our concept cars, such as the Koeru and RX-Vision, our designers strive to embody this dynamic essence.

  • Small but mighty

Hazumi is Japanese for 'tied' or 'jumping' and the Hazumi uses Kodo design to recreate the character of a small but lively animal bursting with energy. The Hazumi was the inspiration for the current Mazda2.

  • A QUIRKY LITTLE CAR

The characterful Hazumi saw the light for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show and convincingly shows that a small car can be big where it matters.

The Mazda2 embodies the Hazumi spirit with its dynamic design, advanced SKYACTIV Technology, a clean and powerful 1.5-litre engine, the MZD Connect infotainment system, the latest collision avoidance system and even more safety features.

  • The language of HAZUMI design

The characterful Hazumi saw the light for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show and convincingly shows that a small car can be big where it matters. The car is equipped with Skyactiv Technology, a clean and powerful 1.5-litre engine, the MZD Connect infotainment system, the latest collision avoidance system and even more safety features.

MAZDA RX-VISION CONCEPT CAR

The Mazda RX-Vision made a significant impact by gracing the cover of Gran Turismo 7, marking a unique moment in the history of the franchise.

This was the first time a concept car, rather than a production model, appeared on the cover, highlighting the car's futuristic design and the excitement surrounding Mazda's rotary engine technology.

MAZDA MINAGI CROSSOVER SUV CONCEPT

The Mazda Minagi was presented at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show as Mazda's first Crossover SUV concept. This is the predecessor of the first Mazda CX-5.

MAZDA TAKERI CONCEPT CAR

At the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, Mazda presented the European premiere of its new Takeri concept car. The Mazda Takeri is a concept sedan and is the latest embodiment of Mazda's design theme 'Kodo – Soul of Movement'. As you can see, this has been the big inspiration for the Mazda6.

MAZDA SHINARI CONCEPT

The Mazda Shinari concept sports coupe is the pure expression of Mazda’s “KODO - Soul of Motion” in its idealised form, and was the conception of a design language that would permeate into all future production Mazda vehicles.
